Marcus Gee’s article on the middle class is possibly the worst thing he has yet written, which is quite the accomplishment. He’s taken his normal preference for anecdotes over facts and unsupported conclusions to a new low.
Sure, the well-researched numbers show that the middle-class is declining and the proportion of poor-to-very-poor is drastically increasing, but here’s an anecdote about new bars in his gentrifying neighbourhood, so don’t worry.
I would give just about anything to have John Barber back.
