There is a memorial ride for Toronto cyclist Charlie Prinsep leaving from Jet Fuel (519 Parliament) at 6 PM on Friday, August 17.
Charlie was struck and killed by a drunk driver while riding from Vancouver to Toronto, after biking through the western United States. You can read more about his ride here on his blog and here on the bike lane diary.
All are welcome whether you knew Charlie or not. Please come and ride with us in his memory.
Some of Charlie’s friends spoke to Kevin Sylvester today on CBC radio’s Sounds Like Canada. The interview should be posted online soon.

my fiance and i are avid cyclists. we drove from toronto to vancouver and back, within the past month. we saw many cyclists on the trans-canada. it made us happy (like i said, we love cycling) but very, very concerned for the safety of the cyclists. i have a photo showing an 18-wheeler within a few feet of someone trying to raise money for MS by cycling across the country.
it’s easy for me to get into the habit of thinking about cycling safety as an urban issue. the stakes are very high, however, in non-urban spots where cars are entitled to go 100 km/h or more.
once again, i am very sorry to hear about this sad story. safe riding everyone, and keep your eyes peeled for cyclists when you’re driving.
