The Women Transforming Cities Best Practice Awards recognize outstanding achievement in designing cities for the advancement of women and girls. The 2013 Awards will showcase good practices, policies and programs at the municipal level that illustrate success, encourage institutional change and improve urban life.
CITIES THAT WORK FOR WOMEN AND GIRLS use an equity lens; encourage participation and leadership in civic life and local decision-making processes; implement prevention strategies which reduce violence against women; have safe public spaces; provide adequate, secure and affordable housing, transportation, childcare and economic stability; and promote community partnerships.
The 2013 AWARDS will be given for Canadian initiatives in two categories: A: Municipal and Local Governments B: Non-governmental Organizations including Corporations.
There is also an international award. Eligible organizations include municipalities; women’s, youth and community organizations, educational, academic and professional organizations, business groups, foundations, media agencies, etc. Entries can be projects, activities, programs and policies from any size community. Nominations can be made by anyone and must include two letters of support from outside the organization.
Winners will be announced at the Engaging Women, Transforming Cities: Designing an Ideal City for Women and Girls Inaugural National Conference on May 30, 2013; results will be published on our website and through various media and newsletters. A Compendium documenting results will provide a description of winning projects, and a synopsis of nominations. All nominees will be part of a data-base providing a benchmark for progress. Winners will have exposure to national and international networks of practitioners. Each winner will receive a commemorative certificate and gift.
