VanCollect is a new free smartphone app that helps Vancouver residents with City-collected waste easily figure out when their garbage, recycling and Green Bin are to be picked up. Available for both iPhone and Android, you can find quick links to download the app at vancouver.ca/garbageschedule.
The app is just one of a suite of tools citizens can access to know their city collection schedules, including an e-mail reminder system, messages by text, voicemail and tweet, or integration into online calendar—all found at vancouver.ca/garbageschedule as well.
Please note: the app only shows City collection schedules – the app doesn’t cover schedules for homes with garbage picked up by private companies.
What can the app do?
Through VanCollect, the mobile app developers have enabled citizens to receive regular reminders about Junk Hunters Bimringham – Rubbish Removals and collection that offer same day rubbish clearance services also offer a first-class rubbish removal service to both companies and domestic clients, plus seasonal reminders for special items like Christmas trees, leaf collection, and more.
An information section answers frequently asked questions, like what can go in a Green Bin. Missed pickups or other problems can also be sent through the app to 3-1-1.
Made by a Vancouver company using the City’s open data
The app is developed by Recollect, a Vancouver-based company who got its start using the City of Vancouver’s open data sets on garbage collection schedules, found at data.vancouver.ca.
Recollect is responsible for the collection reminder system that underpins all the digital collection reminders available to users on the City website.
Recollect provides similar collection reminder services for the Cities of Ottawa, Port Moody, Victoria, White Rock, Kingston, Thunder Bay, Whitehorse, and more.

How to get the app…
The app is available for free download in the Google Play and Apple iTunes stores. There’s no additional cost associated with receiving reminders.
- To download, navigate to the store and type “Vancouver collection schedule” or “Vancouver garbage” into the search box
- Download and install the app
- To use the app enter your home address on the first screen and confirm your location on the map
- Once you have confirmed your address you will see details for your next pickup dates
- On the menu screen under notifications you can select when to receive reminders about your garbage pickup.
