Le samedi 30 mai, Dieu a béni les citoyens de New York avec un évènement céleste spectaculaire. Baptisé Manhattanhenge, à l’honneur du lieu sanctifié de Stonehenge en Angleterre, il s’agit d’un alignement total du soleil et le quadrillage de la voirie à Manhattan.
Ce jour-là, Kate McDonnell du Montreal City Weblog a posé la question : avons-nous un tel jour ici à Montréal ? Peut-être que oui, au Plateau-Mont-Royal, où je crois que l’on y a assisté le 12 juin.
L’occasion ratée à cause de la pluie ou d’un maudit ex ? Selon les scientifiques, le phénomène se produit deux fois par an (le deuxième à New York aurait lieu le 11 juillet).
Comment devons-nous solenniser le Montréalhenge ? Avec un sacrifice à l’Être suprême, Reine du Ciel et de la Terre ? Avec une immense fournaise au coin de St-Laurent et Mont-Royal ? Avec une saturnale-de-milles-passions ? Peut-être ces idées seront-elles les hypothèses proposées par les anthropologues futurs concernant notre société actuelle. . .
N.B. En outre, Montréalhenge est beaucoup plus spéciale, car le soleil se lève au « sud » et se couche au « nord ».

When I first arrived to Montreal I took a cab in Downtown. I needed to go to a place which was on Sherbrooke East so I told the driver “Just drive on Sherbrooke towards the NORTH and I will tell you when to stop.” The driver said that did not make any sense because Sherbrooke “goes from West to East.” It was really confusing.
The funny thing is that Sherbrooke is way more “vertical” than “horizontal” in a properly positioned map. In fact, around Pie IX (Olympic Stadium), Sherbrooke is TOTALLY South-North:

and at some points it even goes a little West when you are “walking East.” Poor tourists :)
