Uxbridge Ontario: Deco vs. Gothic

Read more articles by

As part of a continuing mission to know-one’s-hinterland a zig-zaggy country drive through deep Ontario hill-country yesterday (on the finest of rainy-misty Sundays) led eventually-accidentally to Uxbridge where their fine Roxy Theatre (in a real but Art Deco-disguised Quonset Hut) and Southern Ontario Gothic Public Library were a fine side-by-side sight to look at before continuing on to more dirt roads and King’s Highways.

  1. Nice photo but I wouldn’t call that building Gothic: a typical late-Victorian pastiche, with Romanesque and Tudor elements as well as Gothic. A fine example of its rather hideous type!

  2. That library was a favourite building of aunt Ev Jamieson. She even sent me an article about the famous Seth Thomas clock that is in it. She took many photos of the place. Genetics are spooky.

  3. The photo doesnt show all the strip malls outside town that killed most of the business downtown. Uxbridge had a livable beautiful downtown but surrendered to the car.
