The “sharing economy” is a big buzzword these days, but often the talk is all about big tech giants like Airbnb or Uber. What we don’t often hear about is the groundswell of community-owned and operated sharing initiatives that are helping to give more of us access to transportation, tools, education, office space, gardening space, food, art and thing-making space, and even cute dogs, while reducing our cost of living and improving our quality of life.

“Collaborative consumption” also helps us minimize our environmental impact and brings us closer to others in our community – creating a more connected, safer, more resilient city.

This Thursday, October 16, meet Vancouver’s sharing economy and connect with share-curious folks like yourself at the MapJam one of the city’s newest, most exciting shared spaces, MakerLabs.

Hosted by Share Vancouver, the event invites the public to engage with local sharing organizations and partner organizations while helping to build a crowdsourced map of sharing initiatives all across Vancouver.

The purpose of the MapJam is to collect intelligence about collaborative economy activities and initiatives – from book libraries and tool libraries to carshares and hackspaces – and plot them on a map (this map in fact!). Come prepared with new initiatives to plot!

With this event, Vancouver joins cities across the world for Shareable.net’s Global Map Jam Day taking place on October 16, featuring 24-hour mapping around the world across multiple continents and time zones.

Representatives from sharing organizations and partners around the city will be on hand, offering a unique opportunity to gain a deeper perspective on the local collaborative economy. Sharing organizations participating are Modo, Vancouver Tool Library, TradeSchool Vancouver, HiVE Vancouver, Part-Time Pooch, Share Shed, go2gether, Vancouver Community Laboratory, MakerLabs, Vancouver Cohousing and more!

Share Vancouver also wants to hear from the public about how to define the “sharing economy” and together build a vision for the growth of this transformative new model.

There will be food (from Nuba), booze and lots of opportunities to interact.

If you are interested in learning about the local movement, envisioning the future of the sharing economy in Vancouver or just mapping your community, then don’t miss it!

» RSVP via Eventbrite and please share with your friends and colleagues. The $10 cover goes to cover the cost of the space and food by Nuba!
