Doug Saunders, author and international-affairs columnist at The Globe and Mail will deliver the 2015 Ismaili Centre Lecture on Saturday, September 12, 2015 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., on the topic of Arrival Cities: How Immigration Succeeds and Fails on the Edge of the City. In the context of his award-winning publication, Arrival City: The Final Migration and our Next World, Mr. Saunders will share his insights on how migration and urban growth is reshaping our world and the benefits and drawbacks of these changes.
The lecture is followed by a response from Abidin Kusno Professor at the Faculty of Environmental Studies at York University, Toronto, and thereafter, a discussion and a moderated Q & A with the audience.

Doug Saunders is a Canadian-British author and journalist. He is the author of the books Arrival City: The Final Migration and Our Next World (2011) and The Myth of the Muslim Tide (2012), and is the international- affairs columnist for The Globe and Mail. He served as the paper’s London-based European bureau chief for a decade, and has written extensively from East Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, the Middle East and North Africa. He writes a weekly column devoted to the larger themes and intellectual concepts behind international news, and has won the prestigious National Newspaper Award on five occasions.
Abidin Kusno is Professor at the Faculty of Environmental Studies at York University, Toronto. He is former Director of the Centre for Southeast Asia Research and Canada Research Chair in Asian Urbanism and Culture at University of British Columbia. Internationally recognized as the preeminent scholar in the field of Indonesian architecture and urban studies, Dr. Kusno has published Behind the Postcolonial: Architecture, Urban Space and Political Cultures in Indonesia (Routledge, 2000), Appearances of Memory: Mnemonic Practices of Architecture and Urbanism in Indonesia (Duke University Press, 2010), and most recently After the New Order: Space, Politics and Jakarta (Hawaii University Press, 2013).

Each year, the Ismaili Community in Canada hosts a flagship lecture at the Ismaili Centres in Vancouver and Toronto as part of a global series that aims to bring together thought leaders in order to foster a greater understanding of current critical issues. The lectures encourage exchange and mutual understanding between diverse peoples, communities and faiths, while broadening intellectual horizons and fostering an appreciation of pluralism.
