thinkTORONTO is a Spacing-sponsored urban design ideas competition. The competition will help Spacing celebrate the magazine’s 5th anniversary in the fall of 2008. And the deadline for submissions is only one month away.

We know a lot of you have wonderful ideas about how to make Toronto’s shared public spaces more sustainable, attractive, and functional. This is the time for you to dust off that thesis or to put the brilliant idea onto paper!

thinkTORONTO invites architects, urban planners, landscape architects, designers, artists of all disciplines, students, and the urban curious — under the age of 35 — to submit their plans to tweak, improve, invent, or redesign streetscape elements and specific areas of Toronto. We chose the age limitation in order to showcase the up-and-coming talent of the next generation of city builders.

There are three types of categories: streetscape elements, specific area designs, or general entry. We encourage all participants to approach our public spaces with fresh eyes and fresh ideas. Follow the links to the categories for descriptions and design briefs.

The competition will be juried with the winning entries featured in the cover section of Spacing’s fall 2008 issue. A gallery exhibit will follow the release of the issue. We are also planning to present the winners and finalists to City of Toronto staff — who knows where your entry could lead you?

thinkTORONTO is currently working on sponsorship deals in order to award prizes to winners and finalists. If you have an interest in being a sponsor, please contact us by email.
