Goldhawk Live focuses on cycling tonight from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Rogers Television’s local cable channel — channel 10.
The guests on the program will be Councillor Adrian Heaps, Ward 35 Scarborough Southwest, and Ron Fletcher, the President of the Toronto Bicycling Network.
Heaps was recently appointed as the Councillor representative to the Toronto Cycling Committee. Fletcher is TBN’s new representative to the Toronto Cycling Committee.
This is a phone in show so you can call in to ask the guests about plans to get the Toronto Bike Plan back on track.
The phone number for the phone in portion is 1-800-968-7863.
This will be the first chance to hear what Councillor Heaps’ plans are to make cycling issues a priority City Hall. It should be an interesting show.
Thanks to Martin Koob at biketoronto.ca for the tip.

Presumably somebody taped it?

What I came away with:
1. Cycling in Toronto is extremely dangerous… therefore, everybody… get out and ride?
2. Cyclists are irresponsible. Cars already give us far too much room and respect and we simply abuse it.
3. We need to worry about park path extension, not road bike paths.
Fletcher sounded like an apologist for people who drive cars and really sounded like he didn’t ride his bike other than for recreation on park paths or on group rides. It really pissed me off.
Heaps sounded like most councillors… supports bike riding but nothing substantive being offered. He actually pondered an idea of licensing cyclists and bringing it up at a TCC meeting! Right after agreeing with a caller perpetuating the myth that cyclists don’t contribute in any way financially to maintenance of roads and that we are actually on them because of the generosity of the car-driving public, who pay for it all.
I don’t understand, and I become extremely frustrated, by the idea that anecdotal comments concerning that ‘cyclist I saw yesterday ride through a stop sign’ becomes the basis for cycling policy and is actually treated as the norm. The same isn’t done for car drivers and the things they do.
Fletcher and Heaps both concluded cyclists need to be educated about their responsibility on the roads, but said nothing about doing the same for motorists! Where do they find these people! I don’t like Fletcher, at all.
