West Vancouver Museum is pleased to announce that From the Inside Out: Integrating Art and Architecture on the West Coast has been held over to September 19, 2015. Through drawings, and plans, as well as paintings, ceramics, sculpture, furniture, and photography, the exhibition explores a uniquely West Coast style of midcentury modernist art and architecture practiced by such luminaries as B.C. Binning, Egon Eppich, Arthur Erickson,Bruno Freschi, Shoji Hamada, Fred Hollingsworth, Kawai Kanjiro, Zoltan Kiss, Francisco Kripacz, Wayne Ngan, Len Norris, Ned Pratt, Bill Reid, Jack Shadbolt, and Gordon Smith.
We are also pleased to announce an exciting series of four presentations by architects, curators, and homeowners designed to enhance your experience of the exhibition in its final weeks.
Until September 19, please visit the exhibition during our extended opening hours (Tuesday through Saturday, from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm) and be sure to join us for one or all of the following special programs. All events are free and everyone is welcome!

Enjoy a film screening and meet Hugo Eppich, owner of an Arthur Erickson designed home, and Arthur Erickson’s nephew, Geoffrey Erickson.

Geoffrey Erickson is editor of the forthcoming book, Francisco Kripacz: Interior Design. The book will be launched in November in conjunction with Inform Interiors’ release of a collection of furniture (The Erickson Design Collection) designed by Kripacz and Arthur Erickson. Some pieces in the collection were inspired by original designs for the Hugo & Brigitte Eppich House, included in the current exhibition. Geoffrey will tell us about his upcoming book, as well as another publication underway about the Hugo and Brigitte Eppich House.

Meet an Architect: Nick Milkovich
6:30 to 7:30 pm: Presentation by Nick Milkovich
Nick Milkovich joined the firm of Erickson/Massey in 1968 and worked on numerous projects for Arthur Erickson Architects, becoming an Associate in 1979 and Director of Design in 1987. Principally involved in the firm’s custom private residential work, Nick was also a member of the design team for the award-winning Museum of Anthropology at UBC and the Law Courts in downtown Vancouver. Nick started his own firm, Nick Milkovich Architects, in 1991. The firm has been recognized with AIBC Awards for Excellence for the Waterfall Building in Vancouver, the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, WA, and the Creekside Community Centre in the Vancouver 2010 Athlete’s Village, as well as, the Premier’s Award of Excellence in Architecture for the RCMP Heritage Centre in Regina, Saskatchewan. Nick will share his experience of working with Arthur Erickson and his familiarity with other midcentury modern architects, as well as his own architectural practices.

Meet Kiriko Watanabe, WVM Curator with architect Peter Pratt
6:30 to 7:30 pm: Presentation by Kiriko Watanabe with Peter Pratt
Kiriko Watanabe is co-author and curator of Selwyn Pullan: Photographing Mid-Century West Coast Modernism and curator of From the Inside Out: Integrating Art and Architecture on the West Coast. She is Assistant Curator at the West Vancouver Museum and organizes the Museum’s annual West Coast Modern Home Tour. Kiriko will share some ideas that guided her selection of houses, artworks, crafts, and furniture in the exhibition, and provide in-depth information relevant to the understanding of midcentury modern art and architecture in Vancouver.
Peter Pratt has 35 years of experience as a design/project architect, and a wealth of knowledge. His father, Ned Pratt, is an architectural legend, who was an influential figure at Vancouver’s prestigious firm, Thompson, Berwick & Pratt. In 1951, Ned Pratt built his second family home to experiment new building technologies and materials and showcase his innovative designs. Peter has recently restored and updated the house sixty years after his father built it, linking the original structure by a cedar pagoda to an addition housing a contemporary kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms.

Meet Kiriko Watanabe, WVM Curator with architect John Keay
2:00 to 3:00 pm: Presentation by Kiriko Watanabe with John Keay
John Keay, the Principal of Keay & Associate, Architecture Ltd. in Victoria, grew up in a West Vancouver house designed by B.C. Binning with Ned Pratt and Robert Berwick, Consulting Architects. His belief that architecture exists within the context of its surroundings was influenced by Binning’s practice and sensitivity to nature. Keay will share his fond memories of family gatherings with Bert and Jessie Binning, and insightful knowledge of his childhood home.
