How can you create usable, intuitive and accessible plans that don’t sit on the shelf and get ignored and at worst, create confusion and instead provide a clear translation of the planning knowledge to range of audiences?
Join CivicMeet Vancouver and Golder Associates (formerly HB Lanarc) to explore what accessible and user-centred community plans can achieve once the planning is done.

Our Challenge
Official Community Plans (OCPs) shape how we design, service, and program our communities. OCPs can be well-considered, driven by meaningful and thoughtful consultation.
However, because they can be lengthy, jargon-filled documents that change more slowly than communities do, OCPs can be inaccessible for councils, government staff, agencies, community organizations, and citizens who might help ensure successful implementation.
The Opportunity
How can you create usable, intuitive and accessible plans that don’t sit on the shelf and get ignored and at worst, create confusion and instead provide a clear translation of the planning knowledge to range of audiences?
Design thinking has permeated many areas of business, industry and not for profit organizations. Good design that reflects how we naturally behave is called “usability,” and corporations invest heavily in usability research to make the products that we love and use every day. Local government can learn a lot from reaching out to the civic, design, and tech communities to improve how we translate the knowledge and data in plans to community.
Our Quest
How can we innovate to create inclusive, accessible, and intuitive community plans?
- What kinds of platforms, design, visuals, interactivity work best?
- We’re interested in best practices, opportunities to innovate and where we can learn from other sectors.
Join us for an open conversation and a post-talk meet-up in Gastown. Location TBA.
