COVID-19 has forced a re-evaluation of how we experience the world around us. Restrictions around accessing public spaces during the pandemic have limited our social connectivity, sense of belonging, and local identity. How can we utilize other means of connectivity to add value to public spaces? How might digital technologies foster new experiences?

UBC CAPACity is proud to announce our first design challenge in collaboration with Women Transforming Cities, ArtLink, and UBC Arts & Culture District.

In this design challenge, we invite you to create an inclusive and authentic experience that fosters social connections, uplifts the community, and can be delivered through digital means. How can we meet social, cultural, and environmental aims of our public spaces, while embracing the possibilities that digital placemaking offers?

The Theme

β€œHow can we use digital placemaking to reimagine and activate the Flagpole plaza site on UBC campus?

How might we create a digital place that…
…facilitates meaningful social connections?
…is welcoming for diverse populations?
…is culturally and artistically expressive?
…reflects the identity and stories of the space?
