Polar Umbrella takes first place in skyscraper design contest

Each year eVolo magazine holds a contest that ignites the imagination of architects and pushes the boundaries of what we can build. These futuristic skyscrapers will likely never see the light of day, nonetheless they remain an important part of today’s architectural designs.

In the image above, the Polar Umbrella (which took first place) has a buoyant super-structure fit for melting arctic regions. Onboard desalinization and power generation systems allow this floating city to provide sustainable eco-tourism, research laboratories and housing units. The Polar Umbrella claims to regenerate ice caps using “harvest chambers that freeze the ocean water.”
