Both Shawn Micallef (Spacing associate editor) and Matthew Blackett (Spacing publisher and creative director) were featured in the weekend papers. Micallef was tabbed by the National Post as one of 30 creative Torontonians to watch out for in 2007. Other public space notables in the article are councillors Adam Vaughan and Adam Giambrone, and architectural archeologist John Martins-Manteiga.

The Globe and Mail featured Blackett (photo above) as one of the new movers-and-shakers for 2007 while highlighting the magazine’s desire to repeat the successful SpacingVotes blog and take the urban agenda to Queen’s Park during the next provincial election (the province has a set election date of Oct. 4).

This year, the media really seemed to take a strong interest in public space advocacy. There were a number of features in magazines and papers, but probably the highest-profile artcile was released back in November which focused on Dave Meslin, the founder of the Toronto Public Space Committee, in an extensive Toronto Life feature (somehow we overlooked posting about this feature as it appeared just at the end of the 2006 city elections).

  1. James Cowan had a piece in the Post on Boxing Day about public space activism in general, featuring (of course) Mez in particular. For some reason, it’s even harder to access online than most Post articles are, but I’ll email you the text, Matt.

  2. Don’t know about that photo. Looks like Matt is about to be hung. Thing is that the media are always looking for the new flavours of the month. This means that Matt, Shawn, Mez and Adam V — have to be very careful that they remain true to their ideals. All of you know how the worm can turn! Good luck and thank you for everything so far.
