News on the Wychwood Barns

Read more articles by

A bunch of good news for people interested in the development of Wychwood Barns, the old TTC streetcar garage at Christie just south of St. Clair West.

Council approved a lease agreement with ArtScape for the northerly four Wychwood Barns, a contribution to the project of $350,000 and relief of building permit fees and other related city costs. These are the final Council approvals required for the project to proceed. The ball is now in ArtScape’s court to undertake final architect’s drawings and to raise the remaining money required to get the entire project going. We can expect their shovel in the ground in the late spring/summer. In the meantime a city contract has been awarded to cleanup soil contaminants and prepare the site for both the greenspace piece and the restoration work. The remediation contractor is already on site.

The Art of Reusing Urban Space — discussion series “Scaling the World — Finding the City”
Tacheles (Berlin) and Wychwood Car Barns (Toronto)
When: February 28, 7 pm, free
Where: Goethe-Institut Kinowelt Hall, 163 King St. West

With Stefanie Schulz (Berlin) and Jody Berland/Bob Hanke (Toronto) in discussion, and moderator Prof. Roger Keil, Faculty of Environmental Studies, York University.

Berlin urban sociologist Stefanie Schulz will report on the Tacheles project in the once bustling department store in the centre of the pre-WW2 metropolis. This spectacular and ruinous building was squatted in 1990 by a group of East Berlin artists. It became an icon of post-Wall urban redevelopment in the new Berlin. For details go here.
