“Walking Life” — exhibit opens this Sunday

Walking Life is a month-long exhibition, showcasing work created both by artists and community members, that celebrates the experience of walking.

The exhibition will run at the Gladstone Hotel, 1214 Queen St. W., 3rd and 4th floors, from Sunday September 9 to Thursday October 4, from 12:00-5:00 pm every day. Admission is free.

There will be an opening reception at the Gladstone on Sunday September 9, from 6:00-9:00 pm.

The goals for Walking Life are quite simple. First and foremost, we hope to generate excitement about walking. We’d like to inspire people to reclaim (aka: use!) the sidewalks as public space. We’d like to inspire people to think about the pedestrian experience. And, we’d like people to contemplate the environments in which they walk. We have asked people of all kinds to convey their experiences through art, because the creative process has the potential to stimulate contemplation, interesting discussion and even innovation.

The exhibition is, in part, a prelude to the Walk 21 conference being hosted by the City of Toronto in early October.

  1. I checked with the Walk 21 office this week. If you want to sign up for the conference, it’s $650 for a non-profit organization; that’s $650 per person. I even asked if citizens could get it a little cheaper if we gave walking tours or volunteered in some way. No opportunites like that.

  2. Yes, the fees are really designed for professionals, that’s why we’ve been trying to set up a lot of community events around the conference so that citizens can participate. There are a whole series of events being planned, and public workshops, in the days before the conference. More information should be available fairly soon.

  6. Meanwhile, there’s over $50mill in a reserve fund for the Front St. Expension. As it’s been kinda sitting there, where does the interest on that sum go? It’s a couple million a year at least – one could certainly run a bikeshare program or give a conference, or does it go for nice office space for the TWRC?

  7. Alright, after long time opposition to the Front Street Extension, I’m supporting it, because I can’t stand being on the side of something that this Hamish Wilson has free reign bringing up. Hamish, do you have any idea of what a complete sociopathic nutter you look like? You’re doing so much to harm the anti FSE fight because your constant harping in inappropriate places makes the “movement” look like a bunch of one-issue morons.
